Retaining Wall Services for Homeowners in the Main Line and Havertown area
A retaining wall does a hard job every day. It holds back soil, manages water on a slope, and keeps yards, driveways and walkways where they belong. Over time, water pressure, frost, tree roots and failing mortar can cause a wall to crack, lean or bulge. BJK Masonry & Restoration provides retaining wall services for homeowners in Havertown, Wynnewood, Ardmore and nearby communities, repairing damaged walls before small problems turn into a collapse.
Every project starts with understanding why the wall is failing. We look at the masonry, the mortar, the drainage behind the wall and the soil it is holding back, then recommend whether the wall needs masonry repair, repointing or a full rebuild. For older stone walls, we can repoint with lime mortar prepared in-house, and Brendan’s dry-stone walling training through The Stone Trust brings traditional methods to stone walls built without mortar.
If you are searching for retaining wall builders near you, BJK builds and rebuilds stone, brick, block and precast retaining walls designed around your property, your slope and the masonry already on your home.

Retaining wall cost depends mostly on the wall's height and length, the material, and site conditions such as drainage and access. Most homeowners pay between $3,192 and $9,208 to build a retaining wall. Per linear foot, a 2-foot-tall wall runs about $40 to $200, and a 6-foot-tall wall can reach $360 or more. Repairs usually cost less than a rebuild. At BJK, projects start at $450, and we provide a project-specific price after a free on-site estimate.
Retaining walls hold back soil on sloped yards, reduce erosion, and help control where water goes during heavy rain. They can turn a slope into usable flat space for gardens, walkways or patios, and protect driveways, walkways and foundations from shifting soil. A well-built stone, brick or block wall also adds structure and curb appeal to your property.
It depends on why it is leaning and how far it has moved. Loose stones and failing mortar can often be repaired and repointed. A wall that is leaning or bulging because of water pressure or a weak base usually needs to be taken down and rebuilt with proper drainage. We evaluate the wall on-site before recommending a repair.
Most retaining walls fail because of water. When water builds up behind a wall without a way to drain, the pressure pushes the wall forward. Other common causes include a base that is too shallow or narrow, frost movement, tree roots, and mortar that has worn away over time.
The 1/3 rule is a rule of thumb for gravity retaining walls, which hold back soil with their own weight. It says the base of the wall should be at least one-third as wide as the wall is tall. For example, a 3-foot wall needs a base about 1 foot wide, and a 6-foot wall needs one at least 2 feet wide. The rule is also used in engineering to mean that the soil pressure should fall within the middle third of the wall's base, which helps prevent the wall from tipping. It is a starting point, not a design standard. Taller walls, poor soil or loads behind the wall, such as a driveway, need a site-specific plan.
Yes. BJK builds and repairs traditional dry-stone retaining walls, laid without mortar using time-tested stone walling methods backed by training through The Stone Trust. We also build and repair mortared stone, brick and block retaining walls.
